How this site is built

The rooms

This site keeps my hours. On weekdays during working hours it opens as the Desk: dark, dense, monospaced, a trader's terminal. In the evenings and on weekends it opens as the Study: paper, ink, and a serif that wants to be read slowly. The switch in the header moves you between rooms whenever you like, and your choice is remembered.

Principles

  • One metaphor, executed completely. Everything here is a ledger entry.
  • Bright color never decorates. Azure is the thread, lime means gains or open markets, red means a drawdown, and each ledger class carries its own hue everywhere it appears.
  • The design is the frame. The entries are the point.
  • Fast is a feature. The whole site ships less JavaScript than one stock-photo.

Type

Two families, no more. JetBrains Mono is the Desk's voice, and the voice of every number and caption in both rooms. Newsreader, drawn for long reading on screens, is the voice of the Study. Both are subset and served from this domain.

Machinery

Built with Astro and MDX; every page is static HTML. The interactive parts, the room switch, the market clocks, the entry windows, and the thought graph, are small hand-written TypeScript modules with no framework runtime behind them. Entries live as plain text files with permanent numbers; a duplicate number fails the build. Hosted on Vercel.

Lineage

Honest debts: the numbered archive and its windows owe a nod to Jin Su Park's OA1. The sidenotes and the habit of stamping essays with confidence come from gwern.net. The idea that a hero animation should encode a thesis comes from Recursive. The discipline of two colors and no more comes from Ineffable. The circadian rooms are my own.
